About Us
We are the "Railroading" Interest Group in The Grand. We enjoy running model trains, we love to have visitors to share the fun, and we are always looking for new members.
The Grand Central Railroad Park was started by a few residents of Sun City Grand with a common interest in G (Garden) Scale trains. Other SCG residents learned that the model railroad was being built and joined the effort. The club has since grown to about 40 members.
The club layout is permanent. The track has been laid by the GCRR Members much like the prototype... by first grading of the route, construction of grades and bridges, installation of ballast and finally the laying of the track. Buildings, roads, people, cars and even a few motorcycles have been added to create added realism.
The GCRR Members own their own trains and bring them to the layout to run with other members on every day of operation. It is very interesting to see the wide range of motive power (engines) and rolling stock (cars) that are assembled for an operating day... from modern day diesel engines like you will see running alongside Grand Avenue, old steam engines with up to 18 driving wheels, small "wood fired" logging engines, and even "trucks" that look like they should be on a concrete road instead of the train track.
Some GCRR Members buy ready-to-run models and others scratch build their trains, and still others buy trains off-the-shelf and modify them significantly. Anything that runs... runs here on the GCRR.
Our yearly dues are $25 and as a GCRR Member you are welcome to operate your trains at the GCRR Railroad Park at any time.
We meet monthly for breakfast and a brief business meeting, and twice a year for a slightly more formal business meeting.
We are from all walks of life... but we share a common interest in model trains. Put another way, we are a social group and the trains are simply the focal point.
The main thing we all have in common... we still play with trains as we did when we were kids. And we love to have Visitors who enjoy watching the trains operate as much as we do.
